For over a year, award-winning directors Gereon Wetzel and Jörg
Adolph filmed on site at Düstere Strasse 4 in Göttingen, recording
first-hand the organized chaos that is daily working life at Steidl
Publishers. From book concept to design, from editorial and
prepress to printing, the film exposes the craft of bookmaking
today. Accompanying Gerhard Steidl on travels to artists' studios
and galleries - from New York and Mabou, to Doha and Vancouver -
Wetzel and Adolph also capture some of the unique characters and
collaborations through which Steidl books come into being.
Gereon Wetzel and Jörg Adolph are filmmakers whose passion is
narrative, feature-length documentary films. Graduates of the film
academy in Munich, they have worked in film and television, and
collaboratively since their 2007 film The Reproduction
Crisis. Wetzel and Adolph have received multiple awards for
their work and in 2008 founded the label DocCollection with Ingo
Fliess.

Talk by Gerhard Steidl: Gerhard Steidl Reveals His 100
Favourite Steidl Books
Here Gerhard Steidl presents his 100 personal favourite Steidl
books and shares the secrets of their creation. What is Steidl book
culture and what distinguishes Steidl books from the thousands of
others on the market? Why are these 100 books outstanding?
Gerhard Steidl answers these questions and more in this
interactive presentation - the 100 books will be laid on tables to
be held in one's hands and browsed through - recalling interactions
with the artists and the individual choices for format, layout,
paper, ink and binding materials that together make each book a
multiple of the artist's vision.

Lecture by Gerhard Steidl: The Renaissance of the Analogue in
a Digital World
In 1968 Gerhard Steidl, at the age of 18, founded his own
publishing house and began working as a printer and book designer
for artists including Joseph Beuys, A. R. Penck, Klaus Staeck and
Günter Grass. From the very beginning his concept was to invite the
artists to Göttingen to collaboratively create books with them.
From initial layout to the final printed result, the whole process
takes place under a single roof. Today Steidl has the largest
program of books on contemporary photography and an ambitious
German literature list. Gerhard Steidl also conceives and curates
international exhibitions for artists including Karl Lagerfeld and
Robert Frank. Whether fashion, art or literature, Steidl's aim is
to realize the individual ideas of the artist or author, and to
create art in book form.
In this lecture Gerhard Steidl explores his bookmaking philosophy,
his passion for paper, and why he's convinced the analogue is
currently enjoying a renaissance. The world-renowned bookmaker
gives insights into his printing and publishing house in Göttingen,
and recounts the collaboration there with Antanas Sutkus on his
book Planet Lithuania - from concept to printed
object.
